La Pesadilla Americana is a large-scale ceramic strawberry basket sold by fruit street vendors. They are made of thin, bright green plastic sold as individual baskets or in a box of twelve. Typically, you see them filled with juicy, bright strawberries, but in La Pesadilla Americana, the bright green strawberry basket is flipped upside down, creating a cage. Inside the ceramic strawberry basket cage is a ceramic monarch butterfly. Representing the hard labor of immigrants that is behind the food that sustains us while sustaining them and their families. Immigrants’ labor is overlooked in the United States, and in return, they get caged.
